A New Term – Project: Brand Identity
Yesterday (14/09/2020) was the start of a new chapter here at the Strohacker Design School as we are joined by our September 2020 students! To introduce our new trainee designers to the course, we wanted to start off with the module “Brand Identity”.
What is Brand Identity?
Brand Identity is the visual composition of a company or an individual’s brand, which uses elements such as colour, layout, typeface, and imagery. As designers are all aware, the toughest client is ourselves, this is due to being self-critical and unable to self promote with ease. This is why we started off the course with the Brand Identity module, we want our students to be able to represent themselves visually using the elements of design. The students need to think about who they are, what they stand for, what interests them, and how they want to be seen by others.
During yesterday’s lecture, we went through different examples of Brands and their identity. The example branding we will be looking at and analyzing on this post is the popular streaming service, Netflix.
The Netflix Logo is one of the most incredibly distinctive. It’s so distinctive that everybody and their grandmother knows who and what Netflix is. The use of the type, the one-tone solid red, and the arching alignment of the text make this a well designed and simple logo.
Take a look at the image above, as you can see we have taken sections of the Top, Full & Bottom bleed. Netflix’s branding is so iconic that it is easily recognized by looking at those cut sections of the logo. Why is it recognizable? Because they stuck to their BRANDING! This is what brings us back to the elements of design, colour, layout, type, and imagery, these 4 things create a well established, respected, and visually appealing brand. Simplicity and style is key to creating the perfect self-branding.
